Painting on location!

After preparatory research of several artists (including John William Inchbold and Nikolai Astrup), to see how they created their landscape paintings, I decided to get out and find locations which inspired me to paint!

On this particular day, snow was forecast so I eagerly headed up to higher ground towards Bwlch Nant Yr Arian (typically my go-to-place to paint!) to get first glimpse of the peaks truly wintery transformation! Unfortunately I was unable to find anywhere suitable enough to park and paint this magical view, but I was able to snap a few shots with my camera.

I decided to find somewhere to paint that didn’t pose a risk of me being obliviously snowed in whilst painting the gorgeous scene! Ynyslas was the place I chose, and thankfully gave the best views of the hills without having to be caught up there with the unpredictable weather.

I started painting the background of the picture first, starting with the blue of the sky, building up cloud formations with contrasting greys and whites. The mountains where formed by the application of the darkest colour using a palette knife for definition.

In order to convey the sand in the foreground, I had to build up layers of paint to create the impression of depth: starting with the darkest colours included within the landscape to the lightest. To create a convincing impression of the sand moving in the wind, I had to mix several slightly different hues of the existing colours I had already painted with.
