This week we have been lucky enough to have had cloudless, sunshine filled days and record breaking temperatures for a winters day. With this early glimpse of my favourite season, I had to of course make the most of it! I collected all of my painting gear, trekked up to the top of Constitution hill and soaked up the sun’s rays (whilst working of course!).

The colours over the sea were slightly odd for the time of day. The mix of bright sunshine and mist which lingered over the horizon gave a pale effect of colours usually present at sunrise/sunset. I decided to paint a colour study of these colours on a small 12cmx16cm canvas.
Concentrating more upon the colours present within the sea, I painted another study on the same size canvas. By using these smaller canvases I was able to create a whole representation of my view quickly.
On another canvas I decided to paint the whole scene, with the intention of going back to my studio to paint a larger, more specific depiction of this scene. This final painting enabled me to determine the composition of my painting.
