A Study of Trees…

It has recently come to my attention that the subjects which dominate the majority of my paintings are trees!

For no obvious reason, I have been drawn to specific trees in the landscape and have felt compelled to represent them through my paintings. I now feel that I should looker further into the reason why they have featured so prominantly in my work!

Feeling compelled to investigate my fascination with trees, I decided to take my sketchbook and and sit on a bench along the walkway towards the school of art. The detail of the tree gripped my attention and also the way in which the trees seemed to welcome you along the route they line.

After sketching, I wanted to somehow represent this comforting scene of which the trees in the park illustrated. By avoiding the inclusion of intricate details, I had hoped to present the feeling I remembered through lines and colour.

From this sketch, I decided to test my memory by painting the scene. With only my drawing and brief descriptive notes on the colours present, I found it much harder to construct a painting, than if I were to work on location. The lack of visual references meant that I was particularly uninspired to create a painting. I feel that in future, I should stick to travelling out on to my locations and painting whilst there, this will then enable me to make full use out of all my visual information!
