Yesterdays ambitious idea, to collect a selection of my paintings from this semester and use them as starting point for a much larger scale painting, didn’t go quite as successfully as I would have hoped! I intended to create a painting which would somehow merge several of my previous landscapes together into one. I soon came to realise that this idea wasn’t so brilliant after all, as the painting lacked the originality the others had gained through being created on location.
By doing this, I can now see how important it is that I paint at my chosen location, and work on a smaller scale, in order for my paintings to retain a particular sense of character/feeling within them. By working on smaller canvases, I am able to include more detail in a smaller amount of time, which overall enhances the nature of my paintings. I have also been able to spend more time experimenting with the effects of colour whilst working larger, so I will be able to use this knowledge to improve my paint handling when out painting!
