Sketchbook Studies!

The drawings within my sketchbook will not be used as a reference for my work, but purely as a preliminary investigation before I paint! For this reason, I don’t make an effort to include intricate details, as the main purpose of these sketches are to form an idea of the subject matter and composition for my paintings. I find that using charcoal sticks to create a thumbnail of the landscape allows me to establish a plan before painting (e.g. contrasting areas and forms that create an effective composition). This way of sketching is also a very quick process, so I can jump straight into painting once I have formed a plan!
