My latest painting is situated once again at Nant Yr Arian, but looking in a different direction (East). Because of the visitor centre’s high positioning upon the hills, I have been able to create many different compositions from this location.
Within this painting, I wanted to focus my attention on rendering the hills. I started by mapping out the prominant edges and lines within the hills with a dark green, almost black, coloured paint. This helped me to create depth within my painting, Using a small fountain brush, I distributed light and dark tones of various colours to further demonstrate the rigid surface of the hills. Once I had to got to a stage I was happy to continue from at home (with the aid of photographs taken on my camera), I left and worked on it over several days in the studio.

I continued to layer highlights over the contours of the hills. I decided to mix a blue colour that would subtly, but also effectively contrast against the green of the landscape.

When at the visitor centre, I could not help but notice the way in which the tree in the foreground emphasised the shapes present witting the landscape, as it intersects the composition. This is something I have been aware of previously, and I have tried to represent this relationship between the landscape and the foreground in many of my paintings.
