Layer by Layer…

Week one of the final semester!

After a few weeks off from painting, I travelled up to my go-to place to get back into the swing of things! After working out the composition of the painting through a thumbnail sketch in charcoal, I got to work on my canvas. Starting off by mixing a dark colour to map out the main areas of the painting, I then layered colours from darkest to lightest to create an impression of the scene before me.

As I had spent most of my time focused on representing the landscape within my painting, by the time I had got round to painting the sky the weather had completely changed. I then had to rely on a photograph that I had taken earlier, to use as a reference for painting the sky when back at the studio.

Although I prefer to create paintings whist out on location, I have realised that keeping my camera to hand when out painting is useful at times like this- enabling me to finish my paintings when back in the studio, if needs be!

This semester, I will continue to travel the surrounding areas of Aberystwyth, representing the landscape which inspired my decision to study here.
