The multitude of colours presented within the landscape have a great influence on the compositions I choose to paint. Throughout the last three years of my undergraduate degree, I have become more aware of just how colourful the landscape is throughout each season. Even during the winter, when working on location, I recognised a variation of colours which I sought to express within my work. I have previously described my way of working as ‘turning up the lux’ (instagram editing tool!), in other words, I enhance the colours within the landscape!
Over the last few days, I have focused on a painting containing a whole spectrum of colours. Red hues have become more prominent within recent works, and set against other, yellow and blue tones, creates a balanced composition of colours. A work in progress photograph, where the light depicts rainbow patches upon my painting, coincidentally demonstrates the significance colour plays within my work!

The finished product reminded me of a painting created this time last year: Spring at Ynys Hir. The latest painting created from a photograph, presents a contrast to the earlier one, created on location. I find working on location so valuable for mixing natural colours and depicting a particular atmosphere which is felt within a specific moment in time. However, the aid of working from an image is that it allows for a longer period of time to represent the scene and, overall, improve the depiction of its elements.

Working on location remains an important element of my work, and I look forward to many more adventures within the landscape soon! 🙂
